Rochelle Dweck is a studio art major in her junior year at Syracuse University. Her studies include a focus in sculpture, and a minor in Jewish studies. She was raised in southern Brooklyn and later moved to Manhattan while attending high school. She is deeply influenced by New York City street art, extraterrestrial life, and her Sephardic identity, which has led to a unique eclectic aesthetic. Rochelle is proficient in many mediums such as digital art, design, jewelry, printmaking, drawing, painting, woodwork, metal work, and other mixed media methods. She is an animal lover and a vegetarian and does her best to maintain a sustainable and ethical lifestyle. Rochelle values unique expression and staying true to yourself and pours all that passion into her Mercer.girl creations.
Mercer.girl was created in my senior year of high school after I painted a jacket of my own, my friends noticed, and then encouraged me to start selling my original designs. After much trial and tribulation, and lots of time spent on custom orders, Mercer.girl apparel is now all originally designed-one of a kind apparel. The brand's aesthetic and designs are inspired by the streets of NY. Growing up in NYC, I’ve always been influenced by streetwear and alternative culture. It has always been a dream of mine to contribute to what makes people pop when they’re out and about. Having a blank piece as a base gives me all of the opportunity in the world to express myself. Coming up with original designs gives me the opportunity to pursue different methods of experimentation when it comes to my artistic processes. I’m excited about the future of the brand, and envision a day when my design ideas will include other things besides apparel. Mercer.girl is also born of my personal desire and belief in making sustainable fashion choices. All of mercer.girl garments are thrifted, prolonging the life of clothing that is normally thrown away. I use second hand clothing as a canvas, and reimagine it so that each owner of a MG piece is now a “walking work of art”.
